How to Measure a Throw Mat Sofa Cover

Transforming your space with a sofa cover is one of the simplest ways to refresh your home. It protects against pets and kids, adds warmth, and gives your room a clean, updated look. But to get that smooth, tailored fit, the most important step is choosing the right size.

A cover that’s too small won’t stay in place; one that’s too loose will slip and bunch up. That’s why accurate measurements matter.

At Coverfect, we make sizing easy. This guide shows you how to measure your sofa in just a few clear steps - no guesswork, no complicated diagrams. And if you need help, simply send us a photo and your measurements; we’ll recommend the perfect fit.

Let's get started!

1. What You Need Before You Start

Before measuring, prepare:

  • A soft measuring tape
  • A phone/notepad
  • A helper for larger or L-shaped sofas
  • (Optional) A straight ruler and a photo of your sofa

These basics help ensure accurate, first-try sizing.

2. Identify Your Sofa Type First

Before measuring, take a moment to identify what kind of sofa you have. This will help you know which measurements matter most and which size from our chart to compare with later.

Most sofas fall into one of these categories:

  • 2-Seater (Double Seat) Compact sofas perfect for apartments and small living rooms.
  • 3-Seater or 4-Seater The classic family sofa size - longer, deeper, and ideal for everyday use.
  • L-Shaped / Sectional Sofas with a chaise on either the left or right side.
(Important: Determine whether your chaise is left-facing or right-facing when standing in front of the sofa.)
  • Sofa With Large ArmrestsIf the arms are oversized or padded, they may require armrest covers (included in all Coverfect sets).Once you know your sofa type, you’re ready to measure accurately.

3. How to Measure Your Sofa

You only need to measure three things to choose the right Coverfect size: length, depth, and height. No complicated steps needed.

Step 1: Measure the Handrail (Armrest)

Measure the width of your armrest from the inner side to the outer edge.
This tells you whether you need:

  • 28"x28" (for armrests under 28")
  • 35"x35" (for wider armrests from 28"–35")
Step 2: Measure the Backrest

Measure the width of each back cushion or backrest section.

  • Under 35" → choose 35"x35"
  • 36"–43" → choose 43"x43"

Simply count the number of back pieces your sofa has and match them to the chart

Step 3: Measure the Seat

Measure the width and length of your seat area from edge to edge.
Compare your measurements with the recommended sizes:

  • 35"x35", 35"x47", 35"x63", 35"x71", 35"x83", 35"x95"
  • 43"x43", 43"x63", 43"x71", 43"x83", 43"x95" for Plus sizes.

Important: For L-Shaped Sofas

If you have an L-shaped sofa, make sure to measure both seat sections—the main seat and the chaise—by taking the full length and width of each part. This ensures both sections match the correct cover size.

4. Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

Here are the errors that most often lead to choosing the wrong size:

  • Measuring only the cushion—not the whole sofa
  • Measuring from the inside of armrests instead of the outside
  • Forgetting to measure back cushions
  • Misidentifying the left/right chaise
  • Rounding numbers incorrectly
  • Estimating instead of using a tape measure.

If your sofa has a unique shape, large armrests, or a custom layout, we’re here to help. Just send us a clear photo along with your main measurements (and chaise length if you have one), and our team will quickly recommend the best size for you.
